WRI makes recommendations from road safety inspections

In 2013, Bogota’s Secretariat of Education launched the Bike to School program (Al Colegio en Bici) where children were lent bicycles to cycle to school, accompanied by ‘guides’ to ensure safety. WRI conducted road safety inspections on three of the 86 Safe Routes of Al Colegio en Bici, totalling 11.5 km, and made recommendations which can be replicated. WRI also analysed the city’s road safety data and identified areas where interventions should be prioritized.

WRI supported the evaluation and implementation of traffic calming measures in three dangerous school zones, to protect children walking or cycling. It is currently working on design and implementation of traffic calming measures on a critical road in the Kennedy District, benefitting seven additional schools and two preschools. Providing technical support on safe infrastructure, it has also supported the development of the Bogota School Mobility Plan.
